Maya derives from the word Mayab: Site of the planet Earth named Yucatan
In its beginnings, the Maya, like so many other cultures, justified natural phenomena through myths and legends. As they advanced in their knowledge, they became a religion.
That rather complicated religion had many gods who were worshiped by complex ceremonies to get their friendship.
It was organized by priests who were in charge of interpreting the signs of the gods, receiving their messages and prophesying.
What we know about the Mayans today is thanks to the archaeological finds, their books and the reports of the first conquerors.
One of these books, considered sacred is the Popol Vuh. You can read an adaptation for children on this page.
